Reiki as a complementary therapy

reiki
If you haven’t yet explored the world of complementary therapies, you may be missing holistic options that can help to increase your energy levels, reduce stress, and improve your overall well-being.

There is energy inside us and all around us just waiting to be accessed for our personal use. The human body is thriving with electrical current which we don’t always feel or see, yet there is no denying that it exists within and around us.

Reiki as a complementary therapy, incorporates the use of universal energy and involves the placement of hands on different areas of the body to direct energy in order to alleviate discomfort or pain, increase calmness, release tension, reduce stress, or rejuvenate someone feeling fatigued, and enhance our overall well-being.

Describing how a Reiki session feels, is very much like trying to explain how an emotionally charged experience has affected you to another person – meaning that you can describe it in as fine detail as possible to someone, but not until you experience it for yourself can you comprehend the raw power that reiki has to offer.

There are two ways you can experience the benefits of Reiki:
1.      You can work with a certified Reiki practitioner or
2.      You can take a class to learn to perform Reiki on yourself

A trained Reiki practitioner is able to transfer universal energy through his or her hands and allow that energy to help assist the recipient.  A normal Reiki session can last anywhere from 15 minutes to 1.5 hours and the client either sits in a chair or lies on a massage table, fully clothed, as the practitioner lightly touches the body.

Clients will often fall into a deep refreshing sleep during a reiki session and wake up feeling so much better than when they arrived!

Reiki with its infinite wisdom goes to the place in the body that requires healing.
Picture
Reiki is easy to learn and apply and there is no need to specifically study the anatomy of the human body to use Reiki successfully.  The traditional position of the chakras corresponds to our five senses, functions of our glands, the endocrine system and to the nerve plexus along the spinal column.  The following list may be helpful to identify how each chakra relates and associates with our body:

Root Chakra - Affirmation:  'I Am'

Related Organ/Gland:   Anus, Prostrate
Related Sense:   Smell
Associated with:   Our sexuality, the spine, the pelvis, rectum, legs, bones, feet, immune system, nervous system

Sacral Chakra - Affirmation:  ‘I feel’ or ‘I desire’

Related Organ/Gland:   Testes, Ovaries
Related Sense:   Taste
Associated with: The sexual organs, large intestine, lower vertebrae, pelvis, hip, bladder, the lymphatic system, the mammary glands, and eliminative organs

Solar Plexus Chakra - Affirmation:  ‘I will’

Related Organ/Gland:   Adrenals
Related Sense:   Sight
Associated with:  Digestive organs, the diaphragm, solar plexus

Heart Chakra - Affirmation:  ‘I give and receive love’

Related Organ/Gland:   Thymus and lymph
Related Sense:   Touch
Associated with: The lungs, circulatory system, ribs, breasts, shoulders, arms, hands, diaphragm, the immune system

Throat Chakra - Affirmation:  ‘I have power to communicate’

Related Organ/Gland:   Thyroid
Related Sense:   Hearing
Associated with: Ears, throat, thyroid, trachea, oesophagus, parathyroid, hypothalamus, neck vertebrae, mouth, jaw, teeth, nerves, muscles

Brow Chakra - Affirmation:  ‘I am who I am’

Related Organ/Gland:   Pineal, Pituitary

Crown Chakra - Affirmation:  ‘I surrender to Divine Will’

Related Organ/Gland:   Pituitary
Related Sense:   Divine Compassion
Associated with:  Pituitary, pineal, nervous system, brain

Regular connection with Reiki will bring your mind, body and spirit into balance. The skills and techniques associated with Reiki are simple and easy to learn.  Young children and adults alike can understand and integrate this ancient form of healing into their lives.

The Crown Chakra – ‘Sahasrana’

Picture
The Crown chakra is associated with the pineal gland, brain and central nervous system, it is the body's primary co-ordination center, the meeting point between our body and ego - the universe and our soul.  It maintains a connection to universal sources of energy and with the world as a whole, it is through this chakra that the life force is circulated from the universe into our lower chakras.

When the crown chakra is balanced it allows us to see our true nature and to accept the self as a part of the universe, it is where the mind can achieve stillness and where we will find fulfillment in the union of knowledge, being both the knower and the object of knowledge.

It allows us to move beyond the limits of our ego and to experience a knowing that all of creation is interconnected at a fundamental level, the crown chakra is both a receiver and giver of energy and consciousness.

If the crown chakra is not balanced we may find that we experience a fear of trusting the natural flow of life, an unwillingness to change or an inability to connect with any spiritual life force.  We may even experience a lack of focus and direction, boredom, frustration and lack of joy that might result in migraines, melancholy and loss of self.

The crown chakra leads us beyond materialism to the true nature of life which is abundant in joy, purpose and curiosity…

The Brow Chakra – ‘Ajna’

Picture
The Brow Chakra is often referred to as the third eye or the mind center, this is where our true motivations are found, where we develop our view of the world we live in and how we make sense of what is being perceived, it is the seat of our intuition, our ability to see the truth in situations with an open mind, and is the level of consciousness that directs our actions and our lives.

When the brow chakra is balanced we value the importance of our imagination and have a good memory, easily remembering details when we need them, we see clearly, understand what we see and are able to interpret visual cues as our perception is high.  Our thoughts and internal communications with ourselves are healthy and vibrant. We enjoy a deep trust in our intuition, and also recognise the importance of our dreams because we are able to remember them and value their messages.

It commands the energy flow within the body and helps us interpret the world - our inner world, and the world that comes into the body, primarily through sight, it balances the important and the unimportant, sorting meaning from data and impressions.

If the brow chakra is not balanced we may find that we experience racing thoughts, jump to conclusions, or have bouts of forgetfulness, sometimes being illogical and unable to see the bigger picture in life situations, we may suffer with headaches/migraines, and are also unable to recall our dreams.

The brow chakra is our path to wisdom - learning from our experiences and putting them in perspective allows us to see everything as it is, from a viewpoint of ‘witness or observer’, or from simply being mindful, moment by moment…

The Throat Chakra - "Visuddha"

throat chakra
The Throat Chakra is our seat of self-expression and communication, it serves as the mediator between thought and emotion and can be seen as the bridge between the body, heart and head.

When the throat chakra is balanced we have an ability to listen to others and speak our truth in a way that is steady, tactful, and easy to understand. We know what we want out of life and are not afraid to ask for it or to express our weaknesses.  A balanced throat chakra gives us the ability to communicate our thoughts, feelings and desires without fear of rejection.

It is the connection between our sense of who we are inside, of pure relationships with others, how we represent ourselves out in the world, and of playful detachment.

If the throat chakra is not balanced we may experience a fear of expressing ourselves, fear of speaking our truth, or excessive shyness. The voice itself may become timid and verbal communication very limited.  Often being unable to say what we want to say to others and/or not truly listening to what we are being told.

The heart chakra is also a center of creativity, another form of symbolic communication. As we open up the heart chakra, we open up our creative potential and the greater our resonance within, the greater the power within our creations.

The Heart Chakra “Anahata”

heart chakra
The gift of the heart chakra is how its energy allows us to recognise that we are a part of something larger, that we are interconnected within an intricate web of relationships extending through life and the universe.

The heart chakra represents unconditional love for ourselves and others.  When in balance we radiate divine love and feel deeply connected to others, with a highly developed sense of touch.  Often experiencing a strong connection to nature.

We radiate a peaceful energy and have a compassionate touch that are both very healing to those around us.  We feel balanced and accepting of ourselves and others, understanding and accepting them for who they are, we don’t judge or be critical of their actions.

If the heart chakra is not balanced we may find ourselves experiencing feelings of unworthiness or have difficulty with sharing and receiving, our insecurities and fears may become triggered and we could find ourselves becoming a martyr to others pains or unable to have true empathy.  Our lives may feel out of control, or simply heavy.

By consciously connecting with the energy of the heart chakra we are able to love deeply, and experience a sense of emotional fulfilment.  In relationships being capable of deep intimacy while maintaining healthy personal boundaries.

The heart chakra is the centre of our deep bond with other beings, our sense of caring and compassion, our feelings of self-love, altruism, generosity, kindness, and respect.

The Solar Plexus Chakra “Manipura”

solar plexus chakra
The gift of the solar plexus chakra is our identity, the center where we get the secure feeling of "I am" or how we see and feel about ourselves. It is where we sense our inner power, self-confidence, self-discipline, and our responsibility or reliability.

When the solar plexus chakra is in balance we fully accept our place in the universe and experience a healthy self-love, we radiate warmth and joy through-out our entire being, and also to others who we come into contact with.

We are able to meet challenges and move forward in our life by being proactive rather than reactive or inactive because we are in complete control of our thoughts and emotions.

If the solar plexus chakra is not balanced we may find ourselves becoming judgmental or critical of ourselves and others, reacting to life events stubbornly with mistrust or doubt, often experiencing emotional outbursts and becoming stressed out.  Sometimes even becoming inactive or passive, allowing life to simply pass us by.

By consciously connecting with the energy of the solar plexus chakra we use our personal power in a balanced manner.  We value ourselves and the things that we do, having full confidence in our ability to do things well, we love and accept ourselves,

The solar plexus chakra allows us to express ourselves in a powerful manner, knowing that we have the freedom to choose to be ourselves and direct our own life.

Drum Making Workshop

9/2/2015

We spent two days in dreamlike surroundings. A beautiful light filled room surrounded by a sacred forest.

Each of us created our own drum and although we all had the same ingredients each drum looked and sounded differently.

A beautiful experience that will be remembered each time we journey with our drum.

Shamans or indigenous healers the world over use the beat of the drum to journey between the worlds. The drum as a way to access the wisdom of the universe has been used since the beginning of the human race.

More and more people are now learning and benefitting from this ancient craft.   Drum journeying workshops will soon be available at Energy Centre.

THE SACRAL CHAKRA “SVADHISTHANA”

The sacral chakra is the “seat of all our emotions”, our centre of feelings, emotions, pleasure, sensuality, passion, intimacy, and connection.
Picture
This energy center is also the creative center and where our fertility originates. It’s from this chakra that we can use both the masculine and feminine elements that we embody to create new things.

The sacral chakra is where we retain our experiences connected with both love and hate, it influences how we express our emotions, interact with others and plays a role in the decisions we make each day.

It’s an important energy center that we can focus on to bring balance to various areas of our life, from our emotional wellbeing to our relationships and our career.

When the sacral chakra is in balance our feelings flow freely, we are passionate and open to intimacy.  We are able to express ourselves easily with great self-confidence, being fully aware of our strengths we can handle anything that life brings us.

If the sacral chakra is not in balance we may find it hard to be our true or authentic self and try to simply ‘fit-in’ with others.  We may find ourselves being over-emotional, often feeling a lack of creativity, sluggish and lethargic, or at worst we could suffer from chronic fatigue disorder and experience a weak sex drive.

The sacral chakra allows us to move forward and to let go, to feel and embrace change and transformation happening within our body.  It allows us to experience each moment as it is, in the moment, in its own fullness.

Only 7 days away from the Native Wisdom Gathering in Geneva, and at Energy Centre we're polishing off our drums and shaking down our feathers ready for a week of events with Toltec medicine people, Deni Ndongu and Dabadi.

There are only a few places left at our Drum-making workshop taking place on the weekend of the 31st Feb and 1st Jan - a great way to learn a new skill, develop insight and deep awareness of native medicine practices, and take home with your very own shamanic drum to become a part of your daily life.
This ancient teaching and traditional guiding are unique to this workshop and are not available anywhere else in the country.

If you can't make it for the weekend, why not join us instead on the banks of Lake Geneva, after work on Tuesday 27th from 7-8pm where we will lead the group in a chant and meditation for the rights of mother earth.
A peaceful way to spend an evening among friends. Sign up here so we know you're coming!

Other exciting events this January include a Shamanic healing ceremony and bear medicine dance on Friday 30th at 7-9pm, and one-on-one private shamanic healing sessions which you can book at your convenience during the daytime from Tuesday 27th to Friday 30th January.
