The Reiki Shrine, Tokyo Japan

In August 2012, Energy Centre visited Japan to walk in the footsteps of Mikao Usui, who founded the Reiki healing technique. In the heart of Tokyo is a large memorial stone erected by students of Mikao Usui, as well as the grave of Mikao Usui with the Chiba family crest.
It was an amazing experience to see the shrine and to be present at the spiritual home of Reiki. We feel privileged to have had the opportunity to visit. Although located within the city of Tokyo, the site is not that easy to find. Scroll down to see a handy picture guide on how to get there.
On the same trip, Energy Centre traveled to Kyoto to walk up Mt Kurama. It was on this mountain that Mikao Usui meditated for 21 days, attaining his enlightenment, and received the Reiki healing energy. Read about our journey here.

How to Get to the Shrine
1. Start in Tokyo. Get on the Marunouchi subway line (the red line) and get off at Shin-Koenji (outlined in blue on the transport map below). The address of the memorial which you can type into Google maps is: 1 Chome-3-6 Umezato, Suginami-ku, Tōkyō-to, Japan
2. Exit from Shin-koenji station at Exit 1 (for Ogikubo).
3. Take a right and stay on the same side of the street. Walk about 300m and cross the main road. Take an immediate left, walking down the main road. Look to your left - a small side street branches off from the main road - take this (see third photo below for the entrance way).
4. Continue for about 500m down this small road, past houses and a wire fence on your right. It is quite far down, and you need to walk right to the end, where the road takes a sharp left. On your right at this corner is the entrance to the cemetery.
5. Once inside the cemetery, walk past the large bell, and take the first right down the main line of graves. The map of the cemetery is in front of the small hut, and you can orient yourself by this - the shrine of Usui is marked near the middle left by the words USUI printed twice (see below)
6. Walk all the way to the end of the first row, where there is a large square red brick shrine at a crossroads. Take a left along the small path, and again another left 2 aisles in. You should be able to spot the large tall headstone of the Usui shrine on the left of this path.
7. We hope you found it! The site houses the memorial of Usui, erected by his students, as well as the grave of Usui with the Chiba family crest. Please be respectful of the site and the area.
