Mt Kurama, Kyoto - The Birthplace of Reiki
In August 2012, traveled to Kyoto, Japan, to walk up Mt Kurama. It was on this mountain that Mikao Usui meditated for 21 days, attaining his enlightenment, and received the Reiki healing energy.
Walking in his footsteps was a magical experience. The walk took about an hour, winding on a peaceful path up Mt Kurama while the trees whispered to each other above. Sacred places, streams and bridges dotted the route and the speckled sunlight filtered through the leaves swaying across the path. Many of the trees were marked with special plaited rope called 'shimenawa' hung with strips of white paper ('gohei'), which symbolize purity in the Shinto faith. These ropes are typically placed at the entrances of sacred places to ward off evil spirits, or placed around trees to indicate the presence of 'kami', elements in nature, animals, creationary forces in the universe, as well as spirits of the revered ancestors.
