The History of Sophrology

Sophrology is a method that was created and developed by Dr. Caycedo, a Neuro-psychiatrist, from Colombia, who did his medical studies in Madrid, Spain and his Post Doctoral research in Switzerland at the Kreuzlingen Clinic under Dr Binswanger, a specialist in Phenomenology.  In 1960 Prof Caycedo created the name Sophrology to describe his method, an experiential form of phenomenology, designed to improve the mental and physical health of his patients with minimal use of drugs.  Dr. Caycedo completed The Sophrology Method by scientifically researching the eastern disciplines of Yoga, Zen and Buddhism, to discover what particular movements or exercises had speedy positive effects on the body/mind/spirit.

Dr. Abrezol, a swiss dentist, met Dr. Caycedo at a medical conference and fascinated by this 'sophrology' method tried it out on himself - The result improved tennis game.  Being a generous person he also taught his tennis partners and finally was asked by the Swiss Ski team to coach them for the Olympics, resulting in gold medals.  Thus Sophrology was catapulted out of the psychiatric institutions into everyday life.

Since there are now many different schools of Sophrology all based on the Caycedian phenomenological approach and each school has their own flavour and way of delivering the sophrology method. The Sophrology approach taught at Energy Centre, was created by Dorna Revie, and is called Sophro-Ki.  Dorna, having had the opportunity of being taught Sophrology by Dr. Caycedo, Dr Abrezol, Dr Guy Chedeau and Pascal Mottet, Sophro-Ki Sophrology is firmly based on the tried and tested theory and experiential phenomological exercises of the Caycedian Sophrology Method with additions from over 20 years of experience in using and teaching Sophrology, NLP and Reiki and Karuna Reiki, as well as practising 4 D Medicine, Bio-resonance, Shamanic Healing and Life Coaching.
